Best way to setup a file share between windows server 2016 & macOS Sierra 10.12. To steer away from buying any NAS equipment. I’m using Word 2016 for Mac (through an Office 365 Home subscription) on OS X 10.10.5. I created a Word file and saved it (let’s call it Filename.docx) in a folder on a network shared drive (Seagate 4-bay NAS on local network running latest Seagate NAS OS 4 update).
OSX serves the files happily to OSX users and the problem with Windows users creating files and folders with flaky permissions will return. I resolved that by having scripts which ran on a regular basis and cleared up file/folder permissions as the re-occurred. Not pretty but it prevented 99% of problems. The odd issue still occurs but its better than having to do it everytime. Spell and grammar check program. Finally, and I'll start by saying I've not done it but others can contribute, is to basically replace the OSX implementation of SMB with a 'better' version or AFP solution. There are a few options here but the main ones are Acronis File Connect () which you've said also had issues but I'd perhaps revisit it after you properly join the OSX clients to the domain - this is an AFP solution as it lets the Windows server share with the Apple protocol. Another option I've seen is to replace the OSX implementation of SMB with the official version but to be honest I've no real love for this as you've to do it on all the OSX clients and after an OSX update a re-install will be required but SOME people have gone this route for small numbers of OSX in a largely Windows environment.
The clever design of the Synology bays eliminates the need for screws, or any tools at all. Aside from hard drive installation, the Synology hardware is as simple to configure as any other home appliance. Plug in the Ethernet and power cord, then switch it on. Software Setup Before I tested this unit, I wasn’t sure what to expect with regard to setup. I knew about the easy-to-switch drive bays, but I had this feeling that the software configuration would be finicky and annoying. For the most part, I was very wrong. Setting up the Synology system is a breeze.
